Analyze many types of business data through a data warehouse. When the analytical requirements conflict with the ongoing performance of the operational database, the need for data warehousing often becomes apparent. Running a complex query on a database requires the database to enter a temporary fixed state. For transactional databases, this is usually untenable. Use the data warehouse for analysis so that the transaction database is free to focus on transactions.

Other benefits of data warehousing are the ability to analyze data from multiple sources and use ETL processes to negotiate differences in the storage architecture.
