number of sessions greater than max

We are getting some issues with exceeding the max available vertica sessions. I can close individual sessions to fix but trying to understand how it can show more than the max number of sessions available which is 50 (plus 5 admin sessions). At some points it is over 100. This seems confusing and hard to determine what the actual number of sessions being used is and how to distinguish.
