In short I expect the same result as if I loaded it into PostgreSQL - that the first cell contains (in C escaped string literal syntax) "a\"b", and that the second cell contains "c\nd". I did actually already see that but configuring vertica.ini/VERTICAINI doesn't appear to be doing anything for me.
Edit: Actually it does work. I wasn't exporting my environment variable correctly.

Thanks. I searched the docs but didn't see this. I was also looking under the wrong section (string functions) - for some reason it's considered a mathematical function, alongside sin and sqrt.
